AI radiograph analysis with automated reporting from Align Technology
DentalXR.AI Pro by Align Technology · Tempe, AZ
AI-powered radiograph analysis with automated pathology detection and reporting for dental practices.
DentalXR.AI Pro, now rebranded as Align X-ray Insights following Align Technology’s 2022 acquisition of dentalXrai GmbH, is an AI radiograph analysis tool originally developed at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The software detects pathologies (caries, periapical radiolucencies, periodontal bone loss) and restorations (crowns, implants, root canal fillings) from dental X-rays, then generates color-coded annotations and written diagnostic reports.
The product’s main differentiator from US-market competitors like Pearl and Overjet is its automated reporting feature: rather than just flagging detections, it produces a written report and populates an interactive tooth chart. For practices that spend significant time on radiograph documentation, that’s a meaningful workflow improvement. The Perio Pro Mode adds dedicated bone loss evaluation for periodontal assessment.
The key limitation for US practices: DentalXR.AI Pro does not hold FDA 510(k) clearance. Its regulatory footprint is European: the product launched with CE marking in the EU and UK in March 2025. Align Technology has not announced a US clearance timeline. For American dental offices evaluating AI radiograph tools, Pearl, Overjet, and VideaHealth all hold FDA clearances and have broader US PMS integration support. European practices should evaluate DentalXR.AI Pro alongside those options, particularly if automated report generation and iTero integration are priorities.
+ Strengths
- Automated reporting reduces documentation burden compared to detection-only tools
- Research-grade training data from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin
- Align Technology ownership provides long-term platform stability
− Limitations
- No US FDA clearance; currently limited to European and select international markets
- Fewer confirmed PMS integrations than Pearl or Overjet
Key Use Cases
Automated caries and periapical pathology detection on bitewings and periapicals
Periodontal bone loss assessment via Perio Pro Mode
AI-generated written reports for faster clinical documentation
Verdict
DentalXR.AI Pro (now Align X-ray Insights) is strongest for European practices looking for AI radiograph analysis with built-in automated reporting. The Charité-developed detection models and Align Technology backing are real strengths. However, the lack of FDA clearance limits its relevance for US-based practices, where Pearl, Overjet, and VideaHealth are the established options. If you practice in the EU or UK, evaluate it alongside those competitors. The automated report generation is a differentiator worth testing.
